"Pirates hijacked a Spanish yacht. UOE jumped out of planes into the ocean at night to get them back."

STORY: October 2011. Somali pirates hijacked the yacht Alakrana with Spanish crew in the Indian Ocean. Spain's UOE maritime operators planned a HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening) jump into the ocean at night. They exited aircraft at 25,000 feet, free-falling through darkness before opening chutes just above the water. They landed, inflated boats from waterproof packs, and motored to the yacht. Using thermal imaging, they identified pirate positions. At dawn, they simultaneously boarded from three sides using grappling hooks and fast-ropes. Pirates were still sleeping. UOE secured all hostages without firing a shot, capturing the pirates alive. The operators had jumped from aircraft into ocean, conducted maritime navigation, and executed a ship assault—three different specialized skills in one operation. It demonstrated the versatility that defines modern special forces.
