AO - Area of Operations, defined by the force Commander

AOR - Area Of Responsibility, an area within the AO where a local Commander conducts his operations

APC - Armoured Personnel Carrier, military vehicle that transports personnel and equipment

ARA - African Republic Army

Atap - Jungle shelter made from whatever is to hand

ATV - All terrain vehicle

ATTAC - All Terrain Technical Armoured Car, see FAV

CamelBak - A pliable reservoir to contain water, often worn rucksack style on the back

Camming up - Disguising yourself or an item from the enemy

CTR - Close target Reconnaissance

Cyalume/Nightstick - Handheld chemical coloured glowstick

CAT - Counter Attack Team

KIA - Killed in Action

K-Kill - A catastrophic kill, or complete kill is damage inflicted on an armored vehicle that renders it permanently non-functional. (See also M-Kill)

Kukri - A type of short sword with a distinct recurve in its blade originated in Nepal.

MANF - Mayan Anti Narcotics Force

Means - A way to describe the next method of communicating. i.e. radios, mobile phone, email, face to face etc.

Medevac - Evacuation of casualties to hospital

MC - Military Cross, awarded for gallantry

M-Kill - A mobility kill in armoured warfare is a weapon or vehicle that is immobilized, but may still be able to use its weapons. (See also K-kill)

MRE - Meals Ready to Eat, a self contained US ration pack

MSR - Main supply route

OP - Observation Post, temporary or fixed position to watch an enemy from

Op(s) - Military Operation, a coordinated military action of a state, or non-state actor in response to a developing situation

Ops - Can also be the abbreviated name used to refer to the Operations Officer

ORBAT - Identification, strength, command structure, and disposition of the personnel, units, and equipment of a military force.

Oppo - Fellow soldier or partner, buddy-buddy system or back-to-back

OPSEC - Operations Security, generally an unclassified process to deny an adversary information

QBO's - Quick Battle Orders. When developments on the battlefield affect the original plan or need clarifying due to new circumstances

QRF - Quick Reaction Force

QM - Quartermaster, senior soldier who supervises stores and distributes supplies

SAS - Special Air Service Regiment, a special forces unit of the British Army

Salvo - A simultaneous discharge of artillery or other weapons.

SAVBIT -  Savanna Biome Trust, non-profit environmental organisation

SAW - Squad Automatic Weapon, M249 Light machine gun

SBS - Special Boat Service, a special forces unit of the British Royal Navy

Shemagh - Traditionally a scarf headdress worn by farmers in the Middle East. Adopted by militaries working in hot countries. Also a Western fashion item.

Short- One word, usually used over the radio to denote any type or make of short barreled pistol, revolver etc, without going in to details (see Long)

Sitrep - Situation Report. A report on current military situation

Spec Ops - Specialist military operations using unconventional techniques

SOP - Standard Operating Procedure. Provides clear-cut directions and instructions as to the steps necessary to complete a specific task or process

Squaddie - UK slang for a soldier

UBACS - Under Body Armour Combat Shirt. Designed to be worn next to the skin under body armour., chest rigs and webbing. Often worn on it's own

UKSF - United Kingdom Special Forces (including reserve forces), SAS Special Air Service. SBS Special Boat Service. SRS Special Reconnaissance Regiment. 18 Signal Regiment. 

Note: Units such as; the Royal Marine Commandos. Parachute Regiment. Pathfinders. Ranger Regiment. Comacchio Group. Mountain & Arctic Warfare Cadre. Special Forces Support Group. 7,47,658 Squadrons, Special Forces Flight & JSF Aviation Wing's. Various Intelligence units. And our very own fictional BRIGADE. DEFCON - Defence Readiness Condition, DEFCON1 is the highest alert

Det-Cord - Detonation Cord, used with C4/PE4

DF - Defensive Fire

DG - Director General

DMZ - Demilitarised Zone

DoD - US Department of Defence

DOP - Drop Off Point

DS - Directing Staff/Insturctot/Teacher

DSO - Distinguished Service Order. Awarded for Meritorious or Distinguished service

DZ - Drop Zone, often refereed to with parachuting

Hercules - Military transport aircraft. Designed as troop, medevac and cargo movement

Herringbone - A formation where the 1st person faces forwards, rest of squad line up facing left and right. Last person faces rearwards

H-Hour - The day and hour on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated

HLS - Helicopter Landing Site

NCO Non Commissioned Officer - Junior, JNCO. Lance Corporal, Corporal. 

Senior, SNCO. Sergeant, Staff/Colour Sergeant, Warrant Officer.

NLAW - Next generation Light Anti-tank Weapon (shoulder fired)

NVG - Night Vision Goggles, for hands free viewing. Uses infrared or ambient light

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant, a handheld PC. Term largely displaced by civilians to now refer to multifunctional smartphones (also see PDA below)

PDA - Public Display of Affection (also see PDA above)

Prone Position - A person lying flat, chest down. Supine Position is lying chest up

PRR - Personal Role Radio, a small UHF transmitter-receiver for communication between soldiers

PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. A disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event

Pucara - Ground attack, and counter-insurgency aircraft

R&R - Rest and Recuperation/Relaxation (time off)

Replen - Replenishment of stores and supplies

RPG - Rocket Propelled Grenade. A shoulder-fired missile weapon that launches rockets equipped with an explosive warhead.

RSM - Regimental Sergeant Major (Regimental Scary Monster!). An appointment that may be held by Warrant Officers Class One (WO1) in the British Army, and other Commonwealth countries. Senior enlisted NCO

T  Tango _

TAB - Tactical Advance to Battle - 'Tabbing' is a physical exercise unique to the military. Also known as loaded marching or speed marching, it relates to the way soldiers carry heavy kit and equipment over long distances within a certain time frame

Technical - A non-standard tactical vehicle. A light improvised fighting vehicle, typically an open-backed civilian pickup truck or four-wheel drive vehicle, mounting a machine gun, or other weapon system

Thunderbox - Portable, temporary toilet that can be moved. Often found on building sites, campsites, festivals and events.
